Hyundai Recalls Genesis Coupes Over Unintended Movement

Important Recall for Hyundai Genesis Coupe Owners

Hyundai has issued a recall affecting 12,612 Genesis Coupes from the 2010-2013 model years. This recall specifically targets vehicles equipped with manual transmissions that may experience unintended movement when started, potentially leading to a higher risk of accidents.

What You Need to Know About the Recall

If you own a manual transmission Genesis Coupe from the 2010-2013 model years, it's crucial to be aware of this recall. The issue arises from a switch located at the top of the clutch pedal. Normally, the engine will only start if the clutch pedal is fully depressed. However, in the affected vehicles, this switch may fail, allowing the car to start even if the clutch is not engaged.

This defect could cause the vehicle to move unexpectedly if it is started while in gear and the parking brake is not applied. Such movement could lead to an increased risk of collisions, especially if the car is near other vehicles, objects, or pedestrians.

Understanding the Risks

The potential for unintended movement upon startup poses a significant safety risk. Hyundai has reported that this defect has already resulted in three accidents, although no injuries have been recorded. The main concern is that the vehicle could lurch forward unexpectedly, leading to a collision that could cause injury or property damage.

Given the serious nature of this issue, it's important for affected owners to take immediate action to prevent any potential accidents.

The Repair Process

Hyundai is addressing this issue by offering a free repair for all affected Genesis Coupes. The repair involves replacing the faulty ignition switch to ensure that the vehicle can only start when the clutch pedal is properly engaged.

Owners of affected vehicles can expect to receive a notification letter from Hyundai starting September 23, 2024. This letter will provide detailed instructions on how to proceed with the repair. In the meantime, it's advisable to always set the parking brake before starting the vehicle to reduce the risk of unintended movement.
